A man driving in a northwest Atlanta neighborhood caused massive amounts of damage when he allegedly decided to flee from police, rather than pulling over.

Sometime around two o’clock in the morning, police officers attempted to stop a motorist who was driving without headlights, but instead of acquiescing, the driver reportedly decided to flee. While officers initially gave chase, they soon called it off due to the incredibly high speeds the suspect was driving, just before he slammed into at least six parked cars, and then crashed into a house. The man attempted to continue to run on foot, but he was caught a few blocks away, and subsequently taken to a local hospital for the treatment of his injuries.

The man was charged with several different crimes, and according to authorities has somewhat of an extensive criminal history. It seems as though the car that the man was driving may have been stolen.

An accident last month led to the death of a seven month old baby and 20 year old young man, when a 22 year old woman decided to race her vehicle on Interstate 20 in Conyers.

According to various reports, the woman was racing her Honda Accord, when she suddenly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to hit a guardrail, and then reverted back into oncoming traffic. The car was then hit by an oncoming pickup truck. Both of the passengers in the Honda were killed, and the woman was taken to the hospital for non-life threatening injuries.

Additionally, the accident led to a secondary collision, when another driver was attempting to slow to avoid the accident, and was hit from behind by another vehicle.

Often the blame for an accident may fall on two people.

In this case, the mother of a young woman killed in a mid-intersection collision with a police cruiser alleges that the officer was driving recklessly and negligently just prior to the crash.

The 21-year-old woman, a passenger in the Jeep involved in the wreck, was ejected on impact. She was unresponsive at the scene, and was transported to a local hospital. The officer was taken to another medical facility.

Late last month, former NBA player, Mookie Blaylock, was involved in a serious accident in Clayton County, which left him in critical condition, according to police. Authorities reported that he had currently been undergoing treatment for a seizure related condition, but it is not clear whether that played a role in the collision.

Blaylock was reportedly driving northbound in an SUV on Tara Boulevard in Jonesboro, when he crossed the median line and crashed head on into a van carrying two individuals.

According to authorities, a woman in the van died following the injuries she sustained during the crash. The other passenger, a man, suffered a broken ankle and was later released from this hospital. Blaylock was initially airlifted to a hospital, and was put on life support, until being upgraded to critical condition, then serious, and later fair condition prior to his release.

Atlanta police reported that a two vehicle accident on Atlanta’s westside late last week, resulted in one man’s death, and the injury of four others.

Initial reports indicated that the accident occurred at the intersection of Northside Drive and Marietta Street, when a tow truck collided with a sedan, killing its front passenger. Later reports indicated that the driver of the sedan and three minor children were also injured in the crash, though detailed information regarding their condition was not available. The driver of the tow truck was not injured.

Video footage was taken of the scene following the accident, which showed the tow truck had apparently pinned the car against a utility pole.

While the cause of this particular crash remains unknown, it appears as though it may have been the result of one of the drivers running a red light, or failing to yield to some other traffic signal. Statistically speaking, most accidents occur in or near intersections due to these sorts of driving errors.

If you are involved in a car accident, after reporting the collision to police and seeking appropriate medical treatment, you’ll want to contact an experienced car accident attorney as soon as possible. Car insurance companies have an incentive to settle claims as quickly as possible and for the lowest cost. Many injuries may not present themselves within this shortened time period, or may require additional treatment, and therefore additional expense, over the months or years to come. An experienced attorney can advise you regarding what sorts of claims you may have, and what recovery would be in your best interests. Continue reading

Being involved in an accident with a big rig can happen on any major road.

We read about motorists being involved in an accident with a semi tractor trailer, or some other large commercial trucking unit, but rarely do we put that one incident into perspective. Across the nation, there are over 500,000 people that tangle with big rigs every year. The outcome is never good and those that survive typically have catastrophic injuries that affect the rest of their lives. It is rare that someone walks away from a big rig wreck unharmed.

What causes so many accidents with 18-wheelers? There are a number of common causes, and some of them may shock you. The number one reason that truckers get involved in an accident is drug use. Recent figures indicate that roughly 26 percent of truckers in an accident are taking prescription or street drugs. It goes without saying that if someone is driving under the influence of drugs, it can impair their thinking, judgment and reaction time.

A man was fatally shot to death by a state trooper during a chase.

In March of 2010, a 24-year-old father of three became involved in a high speed chase with police, and the pursuit took to a nearby highway. The man was being pursued in relation to a misdemeanor probation warrant, and the two troopers in pursuit called for backup, spikes and a road block along the route the man was fleeing.

While one trooper was chasing the man’s Pontiac Grand Am, the second trooper positioned himself on an overpass under which the fleeing man would pass. The trooper asked his commanding officer if he had permission to open fire on the car. According to the police records of this event, the commanding officer ordered the trooper on the overpass with a rifle to stand down. He felt there was no point in using a weapon to stop the man, as he was heading for spikes and a road block.

Riding a motorcycle is dangerous – period. However, some locations are worse than others for wrecks.

It’s depressing to discover that there are roughly 4,800 bikers killed each year and approximately 88,000 injured while riding that live to tell about it. And yet, bikers still hit the road in the hopes that they will not become one of those numbers. They may not. However, the fact is that the number of bikers maimed and killed is completely skewed when considering other traffic accidents.

The fact is that motorcycle riders are five times more likely to end up dead in a bike wreck that those in a passenger vehicle, which makes sense, since the vehicle has more protection going for it. While wearing a helmet does help save lives, it is still not the be-all end-all, or magic bullet to avoid death or serious injury. Riding in certain locations is also something a biker needs to keep in mind. For instance you might want to take extra care or avoid riding your bike in West Palm Beach, Florida, Las Vegas, Nevada, New Orleans, Louisiana, Baltimore, Maryland, and Atlanta, Georgia.

Out-of-court settlements are good for the plaintiff. They do not mean there was not a case in the first instance.

This particular case captured national media headlines when a former patient of Narconon of Georgia died while in treatment. Patrick Desmond met his death in 2009 as a result of a fatal mix of opiates and booze, while a patient at the Church of Scientology run Norcross drug treatment center.

The long and short of this case was that the treatment facility misrepresented itself as being a residential treatment center that offered in-patient care. In truth, they had no license to offer such services. Desmond was sentenced to six months in such a facility by a court in Florida.

Domestic violence calls are often deadly. This one was no exception.

This story began when the wife of the deceased called the local police station to report domestic violence. The officer dispatched to the scene was greeted on his arrival by a knife wielding man. In fear of his life, the officer fired his service revolver. That is what the incident report reflected. What eyewitnesses stated apparently was something altogether different.

The 44-year-old man’s family contacted a personal injury lawyer in regard to filing a wrongful death lawsuit. The attorney handling the case indicated there were many discrepancies in statements and in order to get a much clearer picture of what went on that fatal night, they would be doing an in depth investigation. It is speculated that the man’s death was avoidable.
